SodaStream Review
In today’s society we all know that water is our lifeline and that hydration is key to being healthy. When people walk into our gym, one of the first things I ask them is “are you hydrated?” (along with “did you sleep well and are you nourished?”). Personally, I try to drink 3-5 litres of water a day and I recommend no less than 3L of water a day to everyone. Unfortunately, water can be boring and people drink juices and pop thinking they’ll get the same benefits as water, however, juice and pop are just filled with sugar and empty/wasted calories and it’s just not the same as drinking water.
Enter; SodaStream.
I heard about SodaStream about 3 years ago on a talk radio show called Covino & Rich (shoutout to the boys – and Spotty) and I’ve wanted to try it ever since. I don’t drink much soda (pop) since losing the weight, but I do enjoy the occasional Coke ZERO and I love Perrier water, so this seemed right up my alley.
In November 2015 the #SodaStreamChallenge was launched after a survey by Leger Marketing about Canadians’ water consumption found (survey of 1,545 people) that Canadians feel they are not drinking enough water. In fact, 52 per cent consume less than five glasses per day on average… wait… what? FIVE glasses of water a day? How do people even function on that? (www.newswire.ca)
“Because of water’s many health benefits, it is important for Canadians to want to drink more water” says Hélène Charlebois, Registered Dietitian and founder of HC Nutrition Consulting & Wellness. “Some of the many benefits include: regulating body temperature and preventing dehydration, carrying nutrients via the blood to all body parts, getting rid of the body’s waste and regulating the bowels, promoting healthy skin and kidneys, and providing a general feeling of wellbeing and balance. I encourage my patients to reap the benefits of water and find easy solutions to drink more.” (www.newswire.ca)
Other key findings from the survey include:
- 86 per cent of Canadians (90 per cent men and 82 per cent women) are aware of the amount of water they should be drinking per day, yet only 56 per cent think they drink enough
- 47 per cent would rather drink something else other than water
- 46 per cent say they could be more inclined to consume more water if it was more fun or tasted better
- Women are 30 per cent more likely to drink flavoured sparkling water
- 18-34 year olds claim to drink eight glasses of water or more per day; with older Canadians consuming less

This is astonishing to me!
One of the main reasons I didn’t rush out to get a SodaStream machine three years ago was because of empty calories in the drinks. I’m a firm believer that people should drink water and stay away from juices and other crap with sugar and calories that you don’t need to consume. It’s those empty calories that add up. But once I learned that SodaStream had recently released a SodaStream FREE, a new line of flavours without any artificial sweeteners, colours, flavours or preservatives, I was finally up for trying it out.
I’ll be honest, I don’t love the taste of flavoured water to begin with, but this stuff wasn’t bad. The flavours we tried were apple peach, which I didn’t really like, and passion mango, which was pretty tasty. Like I said, I’m not a fan of flavoured waters, but my wife does loves both flavours, and uses them regularly! For me, I really really really REALLY enjoy the water just simply carbonated and I was ecstatic to find out that you don’t have to put flavours in your water to drink it, you can just drink amazingly awesome fizzy water. The carbonated water (which you have complete control over how fizzy it is with the bus of a button) is better than any Perrier or other brand I’ve ever had! I also know of people adding flavour with a squeeze of fresh lime or lemon juice.
I now drink 1L of carbonated water every day at lunch! I can’t honestly say – before SodaStream – when I drank a Litre of water every day at lunch and I’ve been on this healthy journey a long time. I’ve upped my water intake by 1-2L more a day because I have a SodaStream in my house. It’s convenient, it’s green (no bottles wasted and the CO2 cartridges are refillable and recyclable), and it gets me drinking water.
I 100% recommend SodaStream (as long as you’re not using the sugary syrups) and would buy one for anyone as a gift – and I have!
